Activities

The laboratory is equipped with digital and experimental technologies and tools for applied research in the nautical sector. The laboratory works in synergy with the other instrumentation laboratories of Politecnico di Milano.

The laboratory conducts digital simulations and testing of physical models and full-scale objects in the field of fluid dynamics applied to the study of sailboats, motor yachts, components and systems for the nautical sector.

Instruments

The laboratory is provided with a 10-meter sailboat equipped with tools for the measure of aerodynamic forces produced by the full-scale sail rig. The system can acquire information on the load levels on the main structures, on the behavior of materials, and on the behavior of yacht from the points of view of dynamics, comfort and safety.

  • Methods and tools in support of the processes of design and production of yachts and/or components, in particular in reference with mechanical-structural, acoustic, environmental, aerodynamic and hydrodynamic problems
  • wind tunnel testing of sail rigs and hydrodynamic appendages
  • digital and experimental analysis of external aerodynamics of yachts, in particular in reference to the optimization of comfort, smoke dispersion and re-ingestion issues
  • control of acoustic emissions of yachts, according to the rule ISO 14 509 in the field of certification of yachts pursuant to and in accordance with the European Directive 94/25 EC
  • control of smoke emissions of marine engines according to rule ISO 8178 in the field of certification of yachts pursuant to and in accordance with the European Directive 94/25 EC
  • control of mechanical properties of structural elements of yachts made with composite laminates by means of direct measure of mechanical properties of the fiber in accordance to rule ISO 12215-5 in the field of certification of yachts pursuant to and in accordance with the European Directive 94/25 EC
  • other testing services on yacht components non-compliant with ISO rules in the field of certification of yachts
